Most people today don’t realize it, but enzymes are a vital element in maintaining good health. Enzymes are responsible for every reaction in the human body. Without enzymes, we simply die. When enzyme production by the pancreas is insufficient, we can also have many, many health problems.
At this point you might be asking, “If our pancreas produces enzymes, why do we need to be concerned about getting them in our diet?” The answer is, our body has a limited ability to produce quality enzymes. Whatever food is properly broken down from the enzymes supplied by the pancreas is absorbed as nutrients. The remainder of what we eat simply goes through the process of rotting. This process gives off gas, harmful waste products and damages the good bacterial culture within the colon.
The pancreas, being forced to produce massive amounts of enzymes, usually 2-3 times a day, way more than it was ever intended to do, gradually loose its ability to produce enzymes. With this, the entire metabolic system is slowly affected along with it, thus the aging process, the degenerative changes with the breakdown in our immune systems. Just imagine, if you will, let us say there has been 40 to 60 years of this taking place in our bodies. Capacity of enzymes
For most enzymes to operate in the body, the optimal temperature is 37 degree Celsius or 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Changes in pH and temperature affect the activity of enzymes to a large extent. Every enzyme works at its optimum level at a certain temperature and pH. At temperature and pH levels above and below that point the activity of the enzyme decreases.
Other molecules can affect the activity of enzymes. There are certain naturally occurring or synthetically prepared molecules that decrease or even completely abolishing enzyme activity. These are called inhibitors. There are also activators, which increase activities of enzymes.
Apart from the use of enzymes for their biological role they are also commercially used for other purposes. There are many cleaners used in the household, which use enzymes to speed up chemical reactions. Breakings down of proteins or removing starch stains in clothes are facilitated by the use of enzymes. There are more than 5,000 known enzymes. The names of the enzymes characteristically include the suffix ‘ase’ added to the name of the substrate.
The enzymes are found in all tissues and fluids of the body. The intracellular enzymes catalyze the reactions of metabolic pathways, the plasma membrane enzymes regulates catalysis within cells in response to extra cellular signals while the enzymes of the circulatory system regulate the clotting of blood.
